Golf Update

Ryan Strickland

Issue date: 4/13/07 Section: Sports
The Men's and Women's Golf teams at Hendrix have gotten their season underway. I recently interviewed Coach Thad McCracken to see how the season is going and what he expects from the teams.

Ryan Strickland: How has the season gone so far?

Thad McCracken: The season has gone well; we have two full teams and have competed in a few tournaments already this year. We even hosted the first annual Hendrix Spring Golf Classic at Chamberlyne Country Club in Danville. This was a men's only event that included eight other Division III teams as well as Harding University. Our Men's team recently came back from the University of Dallas Invitational where sophomore Dylan Sherwood was the medalist and freshman Russ Schultz finished third.

RS: What expectations do you have for the team?

TM: I expect our team to be competitive every time out. I don't put pressure on our teams to win, but I do however, expect them to play to the best of their abilities and to give their highest level of concentration and effort every tournament. If they have a bad round, that's fine, as long as they didn't let it disrupt them to where they added an additional 10 strokes to their score.

RS: I saw that both the Men's and Women's teams are young. Is that a big disadvantage?

TM: Some people would look at this and say that it is a big disadvantage, but I don't buy that. While we do not have the experience that some other teams have, our younger players have a drive to succeed and when you look at the big picture, have still been playing the game for quite a while at the competitive level. I also realize that we are not quite at the level of the Rhodes', Oglethorpe's, DePauw's, and Trinity's, but we are getting there, and the players I have right now are the building blocks and the most important people in reaching that level. Also, we do have both teams led by sophomores with big tournament experience, with Becca Mayeux for the girls and Dylan Sherwood for the guys.
