If students were to think back to around Valentine's Day, they may remember some of their fellow students in the Sunporch selling valentines to be sent to soldiers. This group of students, according to freshman Julie Champlin, does not have an official name yet, but said that Hendrix Military Support Group will suffice.

"It is an outlet for support for those with or without loved ones in the military. It is pretty much for anyone who supports the military at all," Champlin said.

She started the group with the help of Mary Richardson, her Explorations teacher last semester, and freshman Sarah Richardson, Mary Richardson's daughter.

The Richardsons and Champlin have something in common other than Explorations - a loved one in the military. Mary Richardson's husband has served in Iraq and Champlin's boyfriend is currently in the Navy. They began the support group by just putting some ideas together. The support group "was in the works for a while" according to Champlin. It started meeting earlier this current semester. For Valentine's Day, the group sold cards and candy to be sent to a company in Iraq.

"We wanted to get the Hendrix community involved," Champlin said. The soldiers of Task Force 3 sent a letter of thanks and a Certificate of Appreciation to the group and students who sent valentines.

"It is so good of you to be thinking of us, and supporting us. We all hope you had a Happy Valentine's Day too." -Rob Richardson, 3rd MEDCOM, Task Force 3

"We would like to show a very liberal Hendrix community that these people who serve are people too. People like everyone else, far away from family and loved ones. They are doing very dangerous things and it is important for us to give them support," Champlin said. "You can still be liberal and support the military. It is not about George Bush. It is not about his politics or the government. It is about the people who fight for, die for, and support our country. Freedom is not free. These people work really hard to allow us those freedoms that most of us take for granted."

While this is group is a support group for those with loved ones in the military, it is also a group for people who just support the military and the people fighting for our country.

"We want to be there for each other, but we also want to make people think," Champlin said.

The Hendrix Military Support Group does have a few plans in the works, similar to the Valentine's Day project. The Valentine's Day project "made them (the Hendrix community)] think," according to Champlin. She said she would like the support group to help raise awareness and help a liberal community see that the people in the military do need support from everyone, liberals, conservatives, and everyone between. The Hendrix Military Support Group is currently applying for official student organization status.
