"People have probably seen me walking around campus with my stick," says Coach Lichtig, who offers to go to the fields and "throw" with any student. Lacrosse, which claims to be the oldest sport in America and resembles a mix of hockey and basketball on a soccer field, has already seen a surge in its popularity on campus. As lacrosse comes to Hendrix, these sticks will begin to appear in the hands of Hendrix students as well.
Officially, Hendrix will not see a varsity lacrosse game until January of 2008.
Jeremy Lichtig, former President and Captain of the Auburn Lacrosse Team and Assistant Coach at Susquehanna University, moved into his Grove office at the beginning of this school year. Since then he has begun preparation, not only for the formation of the Hendrix Lacrosse Team, but also for the integration of lacrosse in the small world of Hendrix, as well as integrating Hendrix into the world of lacrosse.
To promote interest in the sport, Lichtig also plans to sponsor an intramural lacrosse league next semester, where teams will play four-on-four, half-field games. Because these teams will not wear any pads, the players will use women's sticks, which do not hold the ball as well, and therefore will make using stick- and body-checks less necessary for stealing the ball from an opponent. Already, there are men's sticks available in the Mabee Center for anyone to check out and use.
Lichtig is working hard to bring lacrosse to Hendrix. Not only has the school seen an increase in students who have played or are interested in lacrosse with the arrival of the new freshman class, but Lichtig is working to recruit prospective students as well. Though he had to start from scratch with the lacrosse team, he hopes that lacrosse will soon become one of the powerhouse sports at Hendrix.
According to Lichtig, "This year is more about introducing the sport, but next year is about competition."
Freshman and former football player Thomas Blacklock is excited that he can be part of the first lacrosse team at Hendrix.
