Thanks to Conway's small size and dismal dining prospects, Hendrix students are rarely afforded the opportunity to scope out new restaurants and enjoy a type of cuisine that is new to their fair city. Most are left each weekend with the daunting task of searching for something just a little bit out of the ordinary without having to drive all the way to Little Rock. But every once in awhile, life takes a turn and sends the bored people of Conway a new restaurant to brighten up their lives just a bit.
Just a few weeks ago a brand new restaurant was opened in Conway just a mere three blocks from the Hendrix campus. Tucked away in the old Wholesale Foods building on the corner of Markham and Harrison streets is a brand new jewel of a restaurant so close students can easily make it there in five minutes. While this new restaurant may not be a groundbreaker as far as unique cuisine is concerned, it is still a new restaurant that serves good food for a good price. What more could a poor college student and hungry friends ask for?
Gina's Jewel is a brand new restaurant that serves country grub at a very decent price. With delicious homemade entrees, tasty country veggies, and sinful homemade desserts, this small eatery has no problem packing in the customers during breakfast and lunch. Those unable to get up and get around in time to make it to Gina's Jewel before two p.m. will be out of luck because this restaurant is only open Monday through Friday, 7am to 2pm. Oddly enough, it is open on Sundays from 11am to 2pm, but closed on Saturdays.
The breakfast menu is a full buffet of almost every breakfast food imaginable. The same is true for lunch, if you like fried foods and buttery vegetables. Customers can choose from about three or four main entrees that change daily, such as hamburger steak, chicken fried steak, or roast beef. For less than six dollars, customers can get an entrée, two side items, bread, and a drink. Extra side items can be added for only a dollar and include homemade macaroni and cheese, mashed potatoes, squash casserole, and green beans.
Although the food options are quite good at Gina's Jewel, don't expect much out of the restaurant's ambiance. The interior of the restaurant is the same as when it was a showroom for the wholesale market's produce. Cheap tables and chairs have just been spread out among the vast openness of the room, and the building's air ducts and piping are clearly visible on the ceiling. The owners have attempted to redecorate the area around the front counter and bar a bit, but the restaurant is still has a very empty, cold feeling when customers first walk through the door. Those who don't mind a less than decently decorated eating area should go ahead and take advantage of the great food and prices offered at Gina's Jewel, while customers who prefer a more comfortable eating atmosphere should wait another month or two before dining at the new restaurant.
