Saluta Resigns; Mabee Center Under New Direction

Issue date: 2/10/06 Section: Sports
The beginning of a new semester at Hendrix has brought with it some changes in the intramural sports program and the entire recreational sports department. The potential creation of new staff positions and the reevaluation of the program could help create a better intramural and physical activity program for Hendrix students in the future.
At the end of last semester, Recreation and Wellness Director Erin Saluta unexpectedly resigned from her position for unspecified reasons. Since then, the Athletic Department has filled her vacancy by hiring Jennifer Sullivan for the position of Interim Coordinator of Intramurals and Recreation. Sullivan earned her undergraduate degree in sports management and then went on to receive her master's degree in sports administration from Eastern Kentucky University.
"When the position became available, we already knew Jennifer and also knew that she had a degree in this area," Athletic Director Danny Powell said.
Sullivan is currently engaged to Dan McCracken, the men's assistant basketball coach, and thus already had correspondence with Hendrix College's Athletic Department. Therefore, an extensive job search was postponed for a semester, so that the Hendrix's intramural program could continue to function throughout the spring semester.
The school plans to conduct a much larger search for a permanent replacement over the summer months and they are reevaluating the goals and structure of the current recreational sports program. And, Powell said Sullivan is encouraged to reapply.
With the completion of the new Wellness and Athletics Center expected in 2007, the College is also considering the proposed needs of the facility and how they can best be satisfied by hiring new staff members. While these staffing changes won't have any affect on students this semester, the Athletic Department "will use this opportunity of a staffing change to reevaluate the program and see if there's anything about it that we want to change," Powell said.
