Toga is the last big party of the year, the best way to forget about upcoming finals and finding summer jobs. It will be held this Friday, the last weekend before finals begin, in the brick pit like always, but there will be a few differences. The most noticeable one will be the big orange barricade.
Anyone who walks near the library is forced to notice the posts holding up the orange snow fencing. This wonder will be utilized to keep toga safe and contained in a certain area. The party is to be kept in the brick pit and the bricked area from the pecan grove in front of the Burrow to the front of Martin. The only entrance will be on the Mills side of the brick pit. The six foot tall plastic wall may seem intimidating, but it is not supposed to "conceal students, but to allocate them to a certain area," says Andrew Vogler, Martin Hall President.
Toga has traditionally been in the brick pit, but the enlarged area is designed to allow plenty of places for students to sit as the brick pit is usually full of dancing. Our college's administration wanted the space divided off to prevent people from wandering into Martin, where they would have to worry about other issues like preventing fire hazards. Of course, students will be allowed to enter Martin during the party, but the school hopes to avoid large masses of students cramming up the hallways. However, the building will be locked before toga starts.
The one entrance into the brick pit will be manned by the Martin Security Council. This group will be composed of current and old members of Martin Hall Council. Two people will be at a table throughout the party to check for two things: wristbands and alcohol.
The wristbands are a new idea. Each student can get a wristband from the Sunporch on Friday from 10:30 AM to 4:00 PM. They can also be obtained through Andrew Vogler and during the actual event. However, a student will need to bring his student ID to the event in order to receive a wristband. The Security Council will keep up with the ID during toga if the student asks so that he or she will not have to carry it around all night.
Each student is allowed to bring up to two guests. He will have to use his ID to get their wristbands for them. The Hendrix student's name will be written on his guests' wristbands so that he will be responsible for his guests. There will be two policemen around to enforce this rule if the Martin Hall Security Council has problems. Hopefully, this new system will solve the problem of unwanted non-Hendrix students wandering around campus causing trouble. As Andrew says, "toga is not their party; they must be invited to come. It really makes you think about who you want to bring as a guest."
