Campus Kitty surpassed its goal of around $16,000 when it raised a total of $17,500 last week, according to Erin Powers, Campus Kitty Chair and junior. About 100 to 150 people showed up at each of the major events: Casino Night, SoCo Movie Night, VZ Ladies/Martin Man Sale, Skating Night, Red Light Revue and Progressive Dinner. Miss Hendrix attracted the most people from all of the events, packing Staples Auditorium. The Homeless Vigil also had a good turnout with about 15 people staying overnight to help raise money for the Bethlehem House.
Collectively, the Silent Professor Auction and the Student Auction raised around $8,300. Red Light Revue made $550. Miss Hendrix pulled in about $3,500. And the Homeless vigil brought in close to $250.
The Campus Kitty Committee decided to try a few new events this year: Couch Jell-O Jump, Couch Jail, Hardin Car Bash and the arcade. Couch's Jell-O Jump took place in the Hulen pecan grove and gave students a chance to jump into a pool of Jell-O to collect as many golf balls as possible to win raffle tickets and instant prizes. The Couch Jail allowed students to buy warrants for the arrest of their friends or enemies. The Hardin Car Bash gave students the opportunity to relieve stress and frustrations by hitting a car with a baseball bat.
"Although the new events didn't have a large turn-out, the people that did show up had fun," Powers said. "The committee members in charge of the new events put a lot of hard work into them and they are already thinking of ways to improve them for next year."
Campus Kitty will host the Kids Carnival, Alumni Babysitting, Raney Topless Car Wash and the Silent Art Auction during Alumni Weekend on April 17 before announcing the total amount of money raised for charity this year.
Some charities Campus Kitty will be helping out are Bethlehem House, Riddles elephant sanctuary and the Conway animal shelter. These charities provided Campus Kitty Committee with a list of needs and the money raised will be spent to satisfy some of these needs.
