Martin Hall Council still looking for Toga venue

Scott Morey, Martin Hall president and senior, didn't figure he'd have to worry about Toga in February - an annual party usually before the weekend before spring finals and still three months away.

But when Morey recently went to schedule the event on the College's master calendar, a requirement for most student events, he found that the set-up for an event the following day would conflict with the Martin-sponsored party.

In past years the event took place in Martin and in the area between Martin and Hardin known as "the drunk trap." But recently stricter fire codes have confined large (planned) parties to the Brick Patio or the Hulen Hall ballroom.

Morey initially thought the Brick Patio would suit this year's Toga, but Social Committee's Spring Fling XTreme, which will feature musical acts, is scheduled for May 1, the day following the evening Morey wanted to schedule Toga. The SoCo event must have stages set up the night before in the Brick Patio, creating an atmosphere not necessarily conducive to a party.

Morey said that Martin Hall council has all but ruled out having the event in Hulen because "traditionally Toga's been an outside thing," he said.

Not to worry, however, Morey said as he and other members of Hall Council are considering different venues and perhaps a different date.

"I don't see any reason that there wouldn't be a Toga," Morey said. "I'm pretty sure we can find a solution to this problem."
