The Hendrix Warrior's volleyball team finished their season with one win against Sewanee and losses to Rose-Hulman, DePauw, Oglethorpe, and Centre. The final Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Cross Divisional took place in Danville, Ky., last weekend.
Hendrix (11-25) opened play Friday with a 3-1 loss to Rose-Hulman. Junior Lauren Standlee led the Warriors with 10 kills followed by freshman Natalie Aaron with nine. Freshman Nicole Mayerle served up three aces, while senior Danielle Baker led the team in digs (29) and assists (21).
The high point of the divisional came with the Warrior's 3-1 victory over Sewanee with scores of 32-30, 30-16, 23-30, and 30-17. Aaron led Hendrix in the hard-fought match with 18 kills and five aces. Standlee added 15 kills and 27 digs, and Baker contributed 26 digs and 50 assists.
Coach Mary Ann Schlientz felt her team performed well. "The girls went into that match with a lot of confidence. They passed well with over 130 digs and they had over 60 kills that match. We had 15 service aces with few errors...that makes a huge difference."
Day two of the games were not quite as positive for the Warriors, as they lost their opening match to DePauw 3-0. Aaron once again led the Warriors with seven kills and 19 digs. Mayerle added 14 assists in the 30-19, 30-15, 30-13 loss.
The Warriors lost their second match on Saturday to Oglethorpe. Hendrix won the first game 23-30, but dropped the next three 22-30, 32-34, and 26-30. Standlee had 17 kills, leading Hendrix. Aaron put forth an excellent defensive effort with 26 digs, followed by sophomore M.C. Ferguson with 24.
Hendrix lost their final match of the season on Sunday against Centre in three straight games. After an excellent effort, the Warriors could not overcome relentless attacking by Centre.
Although Hendrix finished the season with a losing record and in the bottom third of the conference, Schlientz was pleased with the improvement the team made this season.
