Nell Doyle, Associate Director of the Murphy Program, is an intelligent, well-mannered lady, not the kind of person you would expect to see laughing at comedians telling jokes about butt plugs and cock rings. But that is exactly what she was doing last Friday night.
One might expect this kind of humor at a seedy comedy club or at one of the Simeone's houses. But this was taking place at Hendrix's own golden palace of academia, the Murphy House, a location usually reserved for special events and distinguished guests.
Most films at the Murphy House must be watched with subtitles, but the people on screen last Friday night were dropping four-letter bombs like Dennis Leary on cable. Oddly enough, however, what happened at the Murphy House a week ago marked a big success for the program.
Last Friday night the Murphy Program sponsored a showing of the sketch comedy Mr. Show, a funny yet often racy production that used to run on HBO. Senior Daniel Doyle put together the event and used it as an opportunity to discuss satire. He opened the viewing with some jokes of his own but also offered a serious analysis of satire, irony and parody.
The event was a tremendous success. Attendance must have been over thirty. And for three hours on a Friday night students came together to use their brain cells rather than kill them.

The 2003 Campus Kitty Committee sent fundraising solicitations home to students' parents as part of its efforts to raise $14,000 for local charities. Parents have the option of purchasing for their children at Hendrix "a Campus Kitty t-shirt, a t-shirt and event pass or a care package that includes a t-shirt, event pass and Kitty-themed goodies," according to an email the Committee sent out to students last week.

Schools across the nation are cancelling or postponing school-sponsored student trips--national and international--in cautious response to the federal government's raising of the terror alert level to "High" on February 4. Many parents disagree with these decisions because they have resulted in the cancellation of sports events and enrichment trips, such as those to museums and art galleries.
