Hendrix’s campus is expanding once again with the addition of a new art complex. The construction site was the scene of a deadly accident in October.

Construction worker Mike Jansen died October 17 from complications of a fall on the construction site of the new art building. Jansen, of Pocahontas, AR, was moving from one level of the building to another around 10:30 a.m. on Oct. 16 when he fell 30 feet. He was not wearing his safety harness.

Paramedics rushed Jansen to Conway Regional Medical Center. Later that night, he was taken to the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences' University Hospital in Little Rock. He died the next day around noon.

Hendrix President Dr. J. Timothy Cloyd made a statement on behalf of the college. "It is a tragedy and we are sorry for the young man's family," he said.

The Occupational Safety and Hazard Administration (OSHA) is conducting an investigation on the incident. Officials from OSHA, however, would not comment at this time.

Officials from Tilk Contractors, the company in charge of the construction of the new art building, would not comment about the incident. Workers on the site would also not comment.

The art building, which is being constructed with anonymous donated funds, is still on schedule for completion.
